WELCOME!!

Hello and welcome to my stop on the Home for the Holidays Blog Hop!

I am super excited to share two(because I could NOT decided on just one LOL!) recipes that have been family favorites and traditions to have every year!

The first is one that my mother made every year without fail for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners ~

Green Bean Casserole

lg_11067

2 cans french cut green beans, drained

1 can cream of mushroom soup

3/4 cup milk

1 can French’s fried onions

1/8 tsp pepper

Spray cooking spray in a casserole dish, pour in the green beans. Mix pepper, milk and mushroom soup together until well blended and pour over green beans. Sprinkle half of fried onions over top. Cook uncovered at 350* for 25 minutes. Sprinkle rest of fried onions over top and bake for 5 more minutes.

My second favorite recipe that my granny made every year is a dessert, of course!

Granny’s Chocolate Pie

chocolatepieDSC7409

Filling ingredients:
4 tablespoons of cocoa or 1 1/2 squares of baking chocolate
3/4 cups of sugar
5 tablespoons of flour
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1 1/2 cups of milk
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
2 egg yolks, beaten slightly
1 tablespoon of butter

Meringue ingredients:
2 egg whites
1/8 teaspoon of salt
4 tablespoons of sugar

Your favorite pie crust

Directions

Mix your sugar, flour, salt, cocoa, eggs and milk (all except vanilla and butter) with a whisk.
Cook while stirring on medium until it bubbles and thickens, about five to 10 minutes. If it becomes lumpy, just beat out the lumps. (It will not get any thicker in the oven so cook until it’s as thick as you want it.)

Remove from heat and stir in your vanilla and butter. Meanwhile, poke holes in your pie crust with a fork and bake it at 350 until it’s brown, about 20 minutes.
Beat your egg whites with salt and when they start to get fluffy add the sugar. Pour the chocolate custard into the baked pie shell and top with the beaten egg whites. Bake it until it the peaks on the meringue are lightly browned, about 10 minutes.Note: All that’s happening in the oven is the browning of the meringue. So be sure and keep cooking the custard in the pan until it’s your desired consistency.

  1. Thank you so much for the two recipes! My mom always makes a green bean casserole as well, every year like clockwork! It’s a huge tradition! I think it must be for so many! My grandparents have all passed (the last, my grandmother 3 years ago) used to always make candies that were so sweet they would make your hair stand on end, yet they were also the greatest ever! Whoops, I did a memory lane ramble there! The casserole and pie just brought on the ol’ memories. Such a great post, thank you so much!

Now that pie, I’m adding that recipe to my must make list and I’m going to attempt that one for Thanksgiving. It sounds glorious and looks so good in the picture! I’m going to try my hardest not to make it early because I think I could eat that all by myself, and then eat some more of it!

Thank you so much for the great recipes. They are absolutely perfect! I wish everyone the happiest of holidays!

  8. OK, I have to be honest – I’ve been looking for a good green bean casserole recipe that I’d like for YEARS! I really want to give this recipe a shot, but I’m not really a good cook (I can cook anything out of a box, if that shows my ‘cooking expertise’, haha…) so we’ll see how this goes. But I’m really excited, I’d love to bring this to my family Thanksgiving dinner this year! (They’re used to me bringing little smokies, haha!)

And did someones say CHOCOLATE PIE?! I’m drooling just looking at the picture! Thanks so much for the wonderful recipes! 🙂
